Great Web Sites Worthy of Sharing!

www.luminouslandscape.com This is Michael Reichmann’s site. Michael is a Toronto photographer and teacher who presented at last year’s conference. He provides a lot of info, reviews and tutorials. If you join the forums you can comment on many topics of discussion.

http://www.canonrumors.com As a Canon shooter I enjoy the news, reviews and commentary.

http://kelbytv.com/dtowntv/ Scott Kelby’s video training for DSLR owners.

http://www.russellbrown.com/ Russell Brown was one of the original team that developed Photoshop, so I was told. He continues to provide great instructional videos with special scripts. He is very entertaining and makes learning a pleasure and fun.

http://photonaturalist.net/ This site provides great information focused on nature photography techniques.

www.lenswork.com Great B&W focused fine art Magazine and regular blog with podcasts. Brooks Jensen is a writer and publisher from the Pacific Northwest who provides a different prospective on the art.

www.lightandcomposition.com A site that highlights a shot of the day. Many are very interesting.

http://reallyrightstuff.com/ My all round favourite toy store. They produce some of the best gear for camera support in the world. Their catalog makes great reading material too! They will play havoc on your photography budget.

http://www.neccc.org/ The New England equivalent of NFRCC. They have their conference in the summer in Western Mass. There is some good content but not always updated. They are NFRCC many times larger.

Intro workshop on September 20

We had a great turnout and many people milled around the 6 stations set up around the La Marsh Room of the Niagara Falls Library. As requested I will include my information on maximizing scoring and how our competitions work. Next Monday the 27th will be our first monthly competition.

Competitions, How scores are totaled, Maximizing Points

Everyone starts at Bronze Level or beginner and progress annually or you may come from another club and notify the Print or Slide Chairs of your level (it will be up to the discretion of the chair to assign a level). You may enter up to 2 images or prints into each competition group; Projected Images, Colour Prints and Monochrome Prints. Prints must be minimum 80 square inches or 8” X 10” (un matted) to a maximum of 320 square inches including mats and up to 30” wide or up to 24” tall”, projected images must be sized to a maximum of 1024 pixels wide by 768 pixels tall.  We have 6 monthly competitions, September through February. In March there is the club print or image of the year and you may enter up to 4 images in each type.

This year we are trying to institute CAPA scoring practices while maintaining the total score of 15 points for monthly club level competitions.

  • Up to 5 points for Impact,
  • Up to 5 points for Technique, (Sharpness, focus, depth of field, colour, tonality, ETC)
  • Up to 5 points for Composition, (Subject placement, merges, horizons, amount of sky ETC.)

To receive an award:

Bronze           10 Points

Silver              11 Points

Gold                12 Points

Diamond       13 Points

(Honorable mention for 12 points to Diamond only)

Weekly aggregate for each type Projected Images, Colour Prints and Monochrome Prints is the combined total of the 2 entries, 3 extra points for each award received and1 extra point if both entries are different types categories. There are 6 Categories; Action, Creative, Nature, Pictorial, Photo Journalism, and Portraits.

To progress to the next Level of each competition type, the competitor must receive 6 awards. Everyone who receives 6 awards in a class will progress to the next level until you reach Gold then only the top aggregate score will move up to Diamond level.

There is an award for the top score in each class and category. To qualify you must enter images or prints into each monthly competition.
